Lance Klusener (born September 4, 1971 in Durban) is a South African Test and ODI cricketer. An allrounder, he was a big hitting middle to lower order batsman and a fast-medium swing bowler.
Klusener started cricket as a fast bowler and tail end batsman. Against India at Kolkata in 1996-97 he made his Test debut and took a record 8 for 64 in the second innings. He suffered an ankle injury in 1998 and was forced from there on in to bowl with less pace and it was during this time that he began to develop his batting. It paid off and Klusener was Player of the Tournament at the 1999 World Cup, making 281 runs at 140.50 and taking 17 wickets at 20.58. The tournament ended in disappointment however for Klusener, he was at the crease with number 11 Allan Donald in the final over of the semi final against Australia with nine runs needed to win. Klusener hit Damien Fleming for consecutive boundaries but Donald was then run out when they attempted the match winning single. A tie was not enough to make the final and South Africa returned home. In 1999 he also made his highest Test score of 174 , against England at Port Elizabeth. The following year he was one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year.
