Sunil Gavaskar (born July 10, 1949 in Mumbai) is a former Indian international cricketer who played in the 1970s and 1980s.
An opening batsmen with a solid technique, Gavaskar had a strong temperament and was capable of playing very long innings. He captained India in 47 Tests for 9 wins and was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1980.
Gavaskar set many records during his Test career. He was the first cricketer to reach 10000 Test runs, getting there in his penultimate match, and the first to score over 30 Test hundreds. His final tally of 125 Tests was a record but was surpassed by Allan Border who also bettered his Test run tally in the 1990s. Gavaskar's record 34 Test hundreds lasted longer, only recently passed in 2005, by Sachin Tendulkar.
