Sourav Chandidas Ganguly (born 8 July 1972 in Calcutta) is a former Indian cricketer who played for his country in Tests and One Day Internationals (ODIs). A left hand batsman and right arm medium pacer he captained India in 49 Tests leading them to 21 victories, both are national records. As a batsman he scored 7,212 Test runs at an average of 42.17 with 16 centuries. He was more successful in ODIs where he scored 11,363 runs at 41.02 including 22 centuries. Only Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya and Ricky Ponting have scored more hundreds while his run tally is fifth highest. Ganguly formed a successful opening partnership with Tendulkar in ODIs, the pair averaged 49.32 with 21 century stands. He announced his retirement from international cricket in October 2008.
